NEW ZINE: SPOOKY LOVE

Spooky Love is a new zine from illustrator Coby Walsh. Bound in asnazzy pink cover, expect to see much of smiling animals and food withfaces. Nothing Bad talks to Coby about Japan and bento boxes

First things first, though. Who is Coby Walsh?
"My list is Coby Walsh, I graduated from uni 3 years ago without anyreal idea of what I wanted to do or where I wanted to do it.

This led toworking in Tokyo, Japan for a class where I learnt that I definitelydidn`t want to be a teacher and that I loved representative and musicabove all else. (And bento boxes.)

Japanis packed so full ofinspiration, for character/cartoon oriented peopleit`s like some kindof mecca! Nearly everything has some kind ofcharacter mascot, fromyogurts to the Tokyo Tower. (Noppon Brothers, pink overall wearingbrothers. Confusing?) Since returning to the UKI`ve been illustratingas much as I can and working part timeelsewhere."

Secondly, what is Spooky Love?
"Spooky Love was planned before I left to be in Japan, and originallyit was leaving to be based entirely around experiences I`d had livingand working in such a different environment. I`m not the most reliablewriter, so once I got back home it was obvious this wasn`t going to exercise as good as I would have liked. Instead I turned it into a funcharacter zine, with sketchbook work, old and new drawings, photographsand song lyrics all mashed together.

SpookyLove #2 will let that same content structure but I intend toprint infull colour with more pages. Zines have ever been myfavourite way topresent drawings, I love putting them together andgeeking out over theprinting process, and I wish the community feelingthat goes with makinga zine too, trades and zine fairs and talking toother zine makers.Spooky Love #1 is currently for sale at Lik &Neon in London andZINE`S MATE, Tokyo, Japan."
