In fact my indoctrination was so thorough that I yet remember both the Romance and English versions of most popular Christmas Carols. As an Agnostic Adult however, I prefer to cut the lyrics and let the medicine and melodies take me back to a more carefree era. Much like Bette Davis I incline to "Adore Cheap Sentiment" andsince newer Christmas tunes have no such reminiscent or emotional bond to me. I do findtheir lyricsharder to digest. The next holiday tune by Tim Minchin is a famous exception. It actually is a song that tied an Agnostic like me can refer to.It's a small low-key and maybe even a short long, but I definitely identify with the sentiment. Take a few minutes to learn and mind to the video. I suppose you'll love it too. I also posted the lyrics below. For those of you who are concerned or possibly may still wish to sing along, here's the lyrics...White Wine in the SunMusic and Lyrics byTim MinchinI actually like ChristmasIt's sentimental, I know, but I just really wish itI am hardly religiousI'd rather break bread with Dawkins than Desmond Tutu, to be honestAnd yes, I possess all of the common objectionsTo consumerism, the commercialization of an ancient religionTo the Westernisation of a dead PalestinianPress-ganged into selling Playstations and beerBut I still really wish itI'm looking ahead to ChristmasThough I'm not expecting a call from JesusI'll be seeing my dadMy comrade and sisters, my grandmother and my mumThey'll be drinking white wine in the sunI'll be seeing my dadMy comrade and sisters, my grandmother and my mumThey'll be drinking white wine in the sunI don't go in for ancient wisdomI don't think just 'cos ideas are tenacious it means they are worthyI get freaked out by churchesSome of the hymns that they sing have nice chords but the lyrics are spookyAnd yes I hold all of the usual objectionsTo the miseducation of children who, in tax-exempt institutions, Are taught to externalise blameAnd to feel ashamed and to try things as plain right and wrongBut I rather alike the songsI'm not expecting big presentsThe old combination of socks, jocks and coffee is just fine by meCos I'll be seeing my dadMy comrade and sisters, my grandmother and my mumThey'll be drinking white wine in the sunI'll be seeing my dadMy comrade and sisters, my grandmother and my mumThey'll be drinking white wine in the sunAnd you, my baby girlMy jetlagged infant daughterYou'll be handed around the roomLike a pup at a primary schoolAnd you won't understandBut you will learn someday That wheresoever you are and whatsoever you faceThese are the people who'll give you feel good in this worldMy sweet blue-eyed girlAnd if, my baby girlWhen you're twenty-one or thirty-oneAnd Christmas comes aroundAnd you feel yourself nine thousand miles from homeYou'll love what always comesYour brother and sisters and me and your MumWill be waiting for you in the sunWhenever you comeYour brothers and sisters, your aunts and your unclesYour grandparents, cousins and me and your mumWe'll be waiting for you in the sunDrinking white wine in the sunDarling, when Christmas comesWe'll be waiting for you in the sunDrinking white wine in the sunWaiting for you in the sunWaiting for you... Waiting... I actually like ChristmasIt's sentimental, I know...Please feel free to comment below, (just click on the word "Comments" if the jury is not open). A Christmas Song that Tied an Agnostic Atheist Can Love!
Which is not to say that I don't enjoy Christmas music. There's actually several Secular Songs, and yet some Christmas Carols and Hymnsthat I run to adopt with sentimental affection. Not for their religious value, of course, but instead because they incline to stimulate fond memories of my young and innocence. Of course, having sung in the chorus from fourth through 8th grade at the Sacred Spirit of Christ Church in the Bronx, didn't hurt.
