I never see this classic cartoon on TV around Halloween anymore but I think when I was a kid it was required viewing. Of grade I never remembered the commencement of the story involving Ichabod and the beautiful girl he`s trying to woo. I could but recall the great strain as the local tough guy and touch of Ichabod tells the story of the headless horseman and the resulting chase as Ichabod tries to hold his way through the forest. Lucky for me that I spotted this one at the memory as percentage of the DVD The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad. I don`t actually get why the two are put together because Mr. Toad has almost as often to do with Halloween as the easter bunny has to do with my birthday.
I`m skipping the Mr. Toad segment and exclusively focus on The Fable Of Sleepy Hollow since I`m trying to get to horror flicks for the month of October. Besides watching the Michael Jackson video Thriller, this is one of the earliest `horror` flicks I ever watched. I recollect being pretty spooked by the chronicle actually and I constantly thinking the headless horseman was a very cool villain. Around my family it was a failed effort to get the kids to follow some Halloween stories though as nobody stuck around till the end. Man, what`s amiss with kids today! I would be glued to the screen every year for this one.
The headless horseman is one of my favorite animated bad guys.
Narrated by Bing Crosby, which I never realized until I watched this again yesterday, gives the songs a big punch. Who can traverse that Bing Crosby is a prominent singer and his baritone voice as the storyteller gives the film an added touch. Coming from Disney means the life is top notch and it`s awful to believe that this was made in 1949. Disney knows how to do a villain and the dog through the wood is one of my favorite moments in childhood. It`s peculiar and nervous and should be on everyone`s must see Halloween list.
Ichabod comes face to neckhole with the headless horseman.
I`m not very sure how often I can say about this one. If you haven`t seen it so you`re truly missing out but I`m sure everyone at least knows the level of the headless horseman. Great songs, beautiful animation, a spooky story and a few laughs make this one a classic plain and simple. Hopefully I`ll manage to stop this one on TV again as I remember I think it being part of a Disney Halloween special that had dozens of spooky clips from some of their greatest cartoons. Keep your eyes peeled and make certain you get the small ones to sit low and see this out.
Under the marquee - Will
