Not-So-Scary But Still Spooky Halloween Movie Picks!

Not-So-Scary But Still Spooky Halloween Movie Picks!
Posted byDanielonOctober 13, 2010

This sentence of year makes me think about spooky movies. So I`ve prepared for you a number of "Not-So-Scary But Still Spooky Halloween Movies!" I chose that word spooky specifically to differentiate from the word horror. I don`t always like most horror movies cuz they incline to be cheesy.

But I know the vacation of Halloween. The things around it I know are the kitschy decorations, being able to set up and be something entirely different for a dark and of form the fun treats and candies!

So the bad thing about not liking most horror movies is that my options are modified when I wish to see something exciting and spooky. I bet some of you can refer to this. So I have here the X-tropia.com`s list of Not-So-Scary But Still Spooky Halloween Movies! These are movies that some may not even classify as horror and most aren`t even scary at all. But they are spooky enough to get you in a Halloween mood.

signs-movie-shyamalanSigns I used to be so frightened of aliens when I was little. I believe the fear came from two places. I saw this segment about people being abducted on the Unsolved Mysteries television appearance when I was like 5 days old and it frightened me white. Then soon afterwards that I was watching the Fall Zone movie and saw the shot with William Shatner and the beast on the extension of the plane. The way the beast was far out on the tip of the fender and so suddenly peering into the airplane window made me jumping out of my skin. But as the days went by I kinda got over the fear of aliens and instead became fascinated by the idea. Keeping this in mind, fast advancing to me in college watching the movie Signs for the 1st time. I was all solitary and off the lights out. Doing so really brought back that spirit I had experiences from watching those alien scenes as a kid. This isn`t necessarily a perfect movie but I liked it for bringing back that primal fear of the stranger in me.

scream-1996-movieScream This movie is probably the nearest thing to a horror movie on my list. To me it never was scary though. I think I know it because it`s such a fun movie. Even the last scenes have some comedic moments and stuff. In interviews Wes Craven said that one of the first thoughts he had for devising this film was to make the primary star get killed inside the first few moments. Sure enough they give Drew Barrymore top billing and she`s dead before the title pops up on screen.

return-to-oz-poster-movieReturn to Oz Intended as a continuation to the Sensation of Oz, a classic family film, Return to Oz used to hold me serious nightmares. This film is not for kids. At the video store I managed in college we sorted it with the horror flicks in fact. You have Fairuza Balk as Dorthy going to a mental hospital and getting electric shock treatments, you take those freaky Wheelers chasing after her, the witch Mombi who takes off her brain and the creapy claymation Nome King! Ironically all the reasons I was frightened of it as a kid make me absolutely love it as an adult.

the-craft-movie-posterThe Craft Another Fairuza Balk movie, this time she`s all grown up and worshiping the monster or Manu or something. This has all the fun of a teen movie with a creepy magical twist. Four girls start casting magical spells to screw around with their classmates and stuff. Nothing scary here though the conclusion is a little intense.

the_mist_poster-stephen-king-movieThe Cloud I am into any movie with cool creatures in it. I heard that Stephen King got the estimate for this film when he was in a grocery store and imagined what it would be similar if a pterodactyl crashed into the depot and started flapping around the aisles. That only goes to prove how amazing his vision is. But the real spookyness of this film doesn`t come from the monsters it comes from Marcia Gay Holden`s amazing performance as a crazy religious zealot that turns the bunch of trapped people into a mob.

silent-hill-movieSilent Hill Gotta love it another fog movie! I played the tv game Silent Hill 2 before I saw the film so I was already a big fan of the game. I guess it`s one of the best survivor horror game made to date. The film did a big job of creating the same spirit as the game. Although the plot does better at making you feel unique and obscure in the fog surrounded by who-knows-whats trying to kill you. I even enjoy the film and consider the project did a big job. Alice Kridge is bright as ever though to me she will always be the Borg Queen!

sixth_sense_poster-shyamalanThe Sixth Sense Another Shyamalan movie, this is probably his best though. I lucked out because I didn`t recognize what the curve at the end was before I watched it. So I was surprised at the end. Although I consider the grossest scene was when the small girl ghost appears and she`s spewing chunks. I receive an antipathy to spew.

cloverfield-movie-front-coverCloverfield Another one of my favorites. I wish all the queasy cam movies. I know how they took a commonplace of "monster attacks city" and made gave it a new perspective. The greatest thing about Cloverfield was the figure up and the viral advertising prior to it`s release. I followed all the plug and tested to obtain images of the devil and stuff. "Slusho!"

On a geeky side note: have you ever noticed how the "fake" Cloverfield monster picture that they circulated prior to the picture as a red herring actually looks a lot like Sin from Final Fantasy X! Here`s a comparison_

"fake" Cloverfield monster

"fake" Cloverfield monster

Sin from Final Fantasy X

Sin from Final Fantasy X

This concludes the geeky side note. Now second to the list. ;D

underworld-movie-posterUnderworld Before Twilight came along there was Kate Beckinsale kicking ass as a hot vampire death-dealer. This film was clearly inspired by the Matrix with it`s black color and leather trench coat characters. I know this movie most though for the way they go the mythology with new technology. So silver bullets become silver-nitrate bullets and sunlight becomes UV bullets. Another addition is the way they used traditional special effects in many scenes. So instead of all CGI they had guys in werewolf suits. Makes a vast difference I think and will serve it bear the examination of time better.

hocus_pocus-movie-disneyHocus Pocus Can`t give a number of Halloween-time movies without mentioning my favourite one. I know I`ve said this before but Hocus Pocus captures the fun of Halloween that you feel as a kid better than any film ever made. It doesn`t look like October until I`ve watched this movie.

So home you wish my picks for "Not-So-Scary But Still Spooky Halloween Movies!" Add your own picks for favorite Halloween-time or horror movies in the comments section
